Neft Daşları (also known as the Oil Rocks) is an industrial settlement in Baku, Azerbaijan. It lies 100 km (62 mi) away from the Azerbaijani capital Baku, and 55 km (34 mi) from the nearest shore in the Caspian Sea. A full town on the sea, it was the first oil platform in Azerbaijan, and the first operating offshore oil platform in the world, incorporating numerous drilling platforms. The settlement began with a single path out over the water and grew into a system of paths and platforms built on the back of ships sunk to serve as the Neft Daşları's foundation. The most distinctive feature of Neft Daşları is that it is actually a functional city with a population of about 2,000 and over 300 km (190 mi) of streets built on piles of dirt and landfill.

The number of protests in Azerbaijan for the freedom to wear the hijab is growing, as are the questions surrounding those demonstrations—like who is behind them? The hijab, or headscarf, was banned in public schools by the Ministry of Education in 2010, and protests against the ban became violent in October, 2012. Some protestors were armed with wooden polls, and Azerbaijani police say dozens were detained after resisting arrest. Critics of the regime are suspicious, however, and accuse the government of using the hijab controversy to manipulate Western governments' fear that a radical Islamic state will emerge if democratic change comes to Azerbaijan.

There are only 0.1% of atheists. 96.8% consider themselves to be Muslims, 0.8% - orthodox Christians, and 0.1% Jews. Following are the results of the people's attitude towards religion: 83% see themselves as believers; 3.8% said they had not been believers, but had now become believers; and 10.3% said they were believers in the past, but now had become more religious. As for the attitude towards namaz (prayer), 57.6% do not perform namaz, 10.9% perform it daily, 3.5% perform from time to time, and 1.2% only on Fridays. At the same time, 4.7% used to perform namaz, but have now abandoned it. Only 5% of the population regularly attends mosques, and the same number of people support establishing an Islamic religious state in Azerbaijan. About 90% of the respondents respect other religions, and 4% hate them. 2.6% of respondents share the ideas of Salafism (Wahhabism). 42.8% consider it an alien ideology; 12.4% do not like the appearance and behavior of the Salafis, 30.2% have a negative attitude towards them, assuming that they are promoting fanaticism, religious radicalism and extremism.

For more information please read the Treaty of Turkmenchay of 1828 and Treaty of Gulistan of 1813: http://azerbaijan.az/_History/_HistDoc/_histDoc_e.html In November 10, 1724 Peter I the Great send general M.Matyuskin and brigadier Levasev to Baku to arange the settlement and transfer of ethnic Armenians to Baku, Derbend, Shirvan, Salyan and Iranian Gilan and Mazandaran. This arrangement was changed and fullfilled in February 29, 1828 with the Treaty of Turkmenchay when general Paskevich and S.A.Qriboyedov started the settlement of Armenians into Azerbaijani regions such as Nakhchivan, Erivan and Karabakh. By 1832 only half of the total population of the Erivan Khanate remained Azerbaijani. Only 5 years after the creation of the Armenian Oblast. In 1850 the Armenian Oblast was reorganized into a governorate of the Russian Empire. The countless massacres of Azerbaijanis by Armenians with the aid of Russians continued and by 1897 only 37% of the Erivan Governorate remained Azerbaijani. The first clashes between the Armenians and Azeris took place in Baku in February 1905. The conflict spread over to the other Azerbaijani Khanates in the same year. When both Azerbaijan and Armenia declared independence, tensions grew and the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict ignited in Baku when Armenia claimed almost all Azerbaijani lands as part of the Armenian Republic. The Armenian Republic was also involved with a war with the Georgian Republic. Early in March 1918, in just 3 days, over 15,000 Azerbaijanis were massacred in Baku alone by Armenian and Bolsheviks (Communist Russian) units led by Stepan Shahumyan (Armenian Communist). According to some experts the exact number of massacred Azerbaijanis is still uncertain as it ranges from 15,000 to 20,000. Later in 1923 the city of Khankendi in Karabakh was renamed to Stepanakert by the Soviet Union, to honor Stepan Shahumyan for his Massive March Massacre in Baku. Other regions with ethnic Azerbaijani population suffered aswell, over 70,000 Azerbaijanis were massacred in Nakhchivan alone. More then 30,000 Azerbaijanis were massacred in Karabakh. Over 4,000 Azerbaijani-Jews were massacred in Guba. During the short independence of Azerbaijan, the state was mainly busy with defense against Armenian and Russian invasion and massacres. After liberation by the Ottoman army, rebuilding, governmental and cultural reforms became the priority of the Azerbaijani state. It was the first democratic and secular republic in the Muslim world. Not to mention it was amongst the first countries in the world to adopt suffrage to women. Azerbaijan preceded even such developed countries as the United Kingdom and the United States. Stalin was put in charge of the Soviet Caucasus Plan by Vladimir Lenin. In order to calm the region down, Stalin compensated several Azerbaijani regions to Armenia. Today this conflict continues as Armenia occupies about 20% of Azerbaijan, which resulted in the displacement of one million Azerbaijanis. What else can you call two centuries of persecution, annexations and massacres except GENOCIDE.

Iran is home to the largest population of Jews in the Middle East outside of Israel. For 3,000 years Jews have been living in Iran but tensions between Iran and Israel have in the past inflamed tensions. However, Iranian Jews celebrating pilgrimage say there is a greater acceptance from the new government of the moderate President Hassan Rouhani. This old synagogue in central Iran - built more than 100 years ago - is packed once a year with Iranian Jews, the biggest Jewish community in the Middle East outside Israel. Jewish families from various Iranian cities embark on a long pilgrimage to Yazd, 700 kilometres from Tehran, taking the bus or train to perform early morning prayers at Molla Aqa Baba Synagogue and pay tribute to the tomb of Harav Oursharga, a sacred rabbi. An old Torah is removed from a cupboard and a prayer leader recites lines to be repeated by the pilgrims. Pieces of cloth are draped over the book as a form of blessing and Jewish men carry it around the synagogue. The tallit and tefllin are all parts of annual rituals. After the prayer ceremony, Jewish families have breakfast together at the synagogue to celebrate their identity and to enjoy the greater freedoms granted to them under Iran's new moderate president Hassan Rouhani. Sanaz Toubian, is Jewish woman who has come the synagogue from Tehran with her mother. She makes this one-day trip to Yazd by train every year along with hundreds of other Jewish followers. "Here is one of the holy sites that receives one of the biggest numbers of pilgrims. Every year and on the anniversary of his death (Harav Oursharga, a sacred rabbi buried in Yazd), many Jews oblige themselves to come here, despite the difficulties of the trip, or lack of availability of enough buses or train tickets and lack of room for everyone. We perform our rituals here and offer our charities to help these sites too," Sanaz says. The group tour also provides an opportunity for Iran's nearly 20,000 Jews - the largest community in the Middle East outside Israel - to get to know each other and socialise. For decades in Iran, Jews have demanded their schools be closed on Saturdays, the Sabbath, to practice their religious duties but authorities had opposed the request. However, just weeks after Rouhani took office, the government agreed to allow Jewish schools to close on Saturdays. Rama Yousefzadeh, is a 12-year-old Jewish boy from the city of Shiraz that has historically housed a large Jewish population. He goes to the same school as Muslim students but the school, under a mandate by the Iranian Ministry of Education, has permitted him to take Saturdays off and is obliged to hold extra classes for him and other Jewish students to compensate for their absence. "At the school that I go to there are both Muslim and Jewish students but the (Iranian) Ministry of Education have allowed us to be off on Saturdays because based on the Jewish religious instructions, we must not work on Saturdays and should only rest," he says. Homayoun Samiah, is the leader of Tehran Jewish Association that caters to the needs of the community. After his election in 2013, Rouhani appointed Ali Yunesi, a cleric and a former intelligence minister as his Special Aide for Ethnic Groups and Religious Minorities. Samiah recalls a meeting he and representatives of other religious minorities had with Yunesi a short time after Rouhani took office to bring up their demands and seek action by the new administration. One of his main demands was allowing the Jewish students take Saturdays off. For the first time in decades, an Iranian president congratulated Rosh Hashana, the new Jewish year. This was seen by Jews as recognition of their standing by the government.

Police in the Republic of Azerbaijan arrested a number of Shia figures in the southern city of Lankaran. They raided the houses of clerics and activists, including KarbalayiQismat, Syed Nazem and SeyedWaqar, taking them into custody, the Caucasus cultural center reported. The secular government of IlhamAliyev suppressed a Shia-dominated popular uprising in 2010 amid international outcry over his heavy-handed crackdown. Baku began a fresh wave of attacks on the majority Shias on November 26, 2015, when security forces killed four members of the Movement for Muslim Unity (MMU) during a raid in the village of Nardaran. At least 14 people were nabbed in the raid, including the MMU leader Tale’ Bagirzade, who is also known as Sheikh Bagirov. Meanwhile, police have closed off the entrances to Lankaran in their ongoing crackdown. Azerbaijan is a majority Shia state of more than nine million people, with Shias accounting for 85 percent of the population.

Everybody has the right to have a rest as they wish. But, unfortunately, most people have to behave according to their budget. Our survey reveals that for a greater part of the population the recreational destination is either their permanent living address or nearby locations. Some explains it with lack of money, while others with their work. However more people take their rest abroad than those, who rest in the regions of Azerbaijan. They claim that it is cheaper to rest abroad than in Azerbaijan. Eyyub Huseynov complains that recreational places in the regions are in poor condition. These three star or four star hotels here do not meet high standards. Tourism agency representative Maryam Babayeva says the number of the people applying for tourist trips has declined, as prices are not affordable for people. Foreign citizens studying in Nakhchivan say they prefer to take their rest in the regions of Azerbaijan. In general, both foreign and local tourists mainly go to Ganja, Nakhchivan, Gabala, Oguz and Lankaran.
